Below, we have answered the main questions asked thus far. Should you have any further questions, please send us an email at pablosr.robertj@gmail.com and we’ll get back to you asap.
General
The wedding is taking place at a location called Qinta do Colegio on the outskirts of Porto (Portugal), about 20km away from the city centre. Address: Rua de Farilhe 630, 4485-060, Portugal.
We have the location, DJ and open bar until 5am, so… Please see the timings section below for further details.
Yes, of course! Please see the children’s section below.
Obviously, we are hoping for good weather. In Porto in August, that means sunny with hot temperatures around 25-30*C. The location is on a hill near the sea, so unlike the rest of Porto, we should get a bit of a breeze to keep things cool. Furthermore, the wedding venue has lots of shaded areas and greenery to keep things human, while the dining area has air conditioning. In the unlikely event that it rains – which, given the average 2 hours of rain in August in Porto, can only mean that someone up there must really hate us – there are plenty of indoor areas to use.
Err, you may wear whatever you like within the bounds of legality. We shall leave this to you.
We would love it if everyone were to make two recommendations for songs they’d like to hear at the disco. We will then pass this on to Mr(s) DJ.
So… Pablo’s family speaks Spanish, Robert’s family speaks English. Some people on either side can speak the other language, but let’s be honest, that’s mostly Spanish people who can speak English and not the other way around! However, when it comes to the speeches, we are going to attempt a real-time translation service. For this, you will need a mobile phone (to connect to the on-site wifi) and a set of headphones that you can connect to your phone. We will set up an audio-only Zoom call or similar and then everyone can listen in to the English/Spanish translation of what is being said. Can it work? It should do. Will it work? Who knows! Essentially everyone is very friendly and, if in doubt, everyone understands hand-gestures! (On that note, it should be pointed out that the ‘extended index and pinky finger’ gesture commonly used by rock music fans while shouting ‘Rock on!’ means ‘Your wife is cheating on you’ in Spain, so maybe avoid that?!)
This may sound ridiculous, but you should check this. Now that the UK is no longer in the EU, there are more stringent rules on passport validity than before (and Portugal is one of the strictest enforcers) and as of some time in 2023, it is planned that all non-EU citizens (including UK citizens) will need a visa-waiver to travel to the EU.
Passport rules: your passport cannot have an issue date that is more than ten years old (so if your passport was issued 12 years ago and is still valid, it sadly isn’t valid for entry into the EU), and the expiry date of the passport must be more than 6 months in the future.
Visa-waiver rules: the new system is called ETIAS and it isn’t clear yet how this will work or when it will be introduced (predicted May 2023 at the time of writing), but it’ll no doubt be very similar to the US visa waiver process. Best to check nearer the time.
So, let’s be honest. We’re both in our mid-30s and have sufficient toasters (we actually have two, both of which are in our basement, because that’s where we make toast…). As such, if you are thinking of giving a gift, we’d really appreciate a contribution to our honeymoon.
To that end, our account details are as follows:
UK (GBP): HSBC / 91330780 / 40-39-04
Germany (EUR): Comdirect / DE16 2004 1155 0626 6274 00 / COBADEHD055
I’ve been told that this process is a lot less controversial if you include a cute poem, so I offer up the following:
If a gift is your intention,
Then we thought that we would mention,
We’d love some pennies to rub together,
To save for something we will treasure!
Timings
The evening before the wedding (Friday 4th), we are planning a get-together at an as-yet unknown location in downtown Porto from about 7pm. We’ll send out more details nearer the time, but it would be lovely to see you there!
The wedding is on 5th August 2023 (Saturday). The reception will begin at 1pm, the ceremony will take place at 1:30pm, and the festivities will continue until the early hours.
Accommodation and Transport
So you essentially have three options, as outlined below. Please note that we plan to arrange buses to take guests from downtown Porto to the wedding location and then back again (at 12am and 2am). If you are staying in Vila do Conde or Povoa de Varzim, we can help you to arrange a taxi transfer (or no doubt your hotel can do the same!).
• Porto: The city is very nice to visit and you easily have enough there to entertain you for 2-3 days.
• Vila do Conde: this is located just outside Porto airport. The advantage of this area is that it is only 12km away from the wedding venue by car. There is also a local ‘Fashion outlet’ and a beach. There is a metro line here to Porto city centre which takes ca. 60 mins with a train leaving every 30 mins.
• Povoa de Varzim: At the very end of the enormously long metro line that runs through Vila do Conde, this is a bit further outside of Porto in the north, but is more of a holiday resort with sandy beaches (see further details below).
Porto airport has a metro line (purple, line E) which runs approx. every 20 mins to Porto city centre, taking ca. 20 mins. If you are staying at Vila do Conde or Povoa de Varzim, then you can also get the metro, but you’ll first need to take the purple line two stops to Verdes, then change to the red line northbound – this will take ca. 50 mins. Alternatively, you can get a taxi (which are much cheaper than in London / Munich) or hire a rental car.
Our intention is to book two buses to take everyone to the wedding venue on the morning of the wedding, probably about 12-ish. These ‘wedding wagons’ will start in the centre of Porto and proceed to the venue at: Quinta do Colegio, Rua de Farilhe 630, 4485-060, Portugal. Should you have a (rental) car, GPS systems should recognise the postcode above, and there is plenty of free parking on-site. The GPS coordinates are: 41º18’58.66”N 8º38’33.68”W.
So, we are planning to arrange for another two wedding wagons to pick people up around 12am & 2am, taking everyone to downtown Porto. From that point on, taxis (e.g. Uber) can be taken to return to wherever your hotel is as and when you want (ca. 30 mins to downtown Porto / €20 per taxi). Please let us know if you’d like to use this bus service so that we can get an idea of numbers.
There are quite a few options here:
• Porto: Porto is a great city – especially if you like Port wine! You can easily fill 2-3 days with things to see and do. Some suggestions include visiting one of the many port-wine cellars and eating a calorific Francesinha.
• Povoa de Varzim: as mentioned above, this is a holiday resort with sandy beaches (as most Portuguese beaches in the north are rocky). Very picturesque, very nice. However, please note that the sea here is the Atlantic Ocean and, while pleasant enough temperature-wise in August/September, does not have the bath-like character of the Mediterranean. Therefore, larger waves and more wind should be expected.
• Algarve: Of course, the most famous holiday area of Portugal is in the very south. You can drive there from Porto in about 5 hours. Or there are options to go by train to Faro/Albufeira in approx. 7 hours.
• Lisbon: There are direct trains from Porto to Lisbon which take about 3 hours, similar to the time it takes to drive.
Food
In short, absolutely not. From what we gather, Portuguese tradition is such that weddings should have more food on offer than humanly consumable.
There is an open bar. Enough said.
Yes. Just let us know per the RSVP and we’ll sort this out.
Children
Yes, there is.
Basically yes – the entire location has a perimeter fence so kids shouldn’t be able to get out. There is also a child-minding service provided and a play-room.
Yes, there are two poop-scoop locations on hand.
